FAQ

Questions, answered honestly.

Short answers to what people ask most. Tap a question to open it.

Is Shonen free?

Yes. The core app is free and complete: plans, swaps, the workout player, XP and evolution, the story and social features. Safety features — the health check, conditions and stop signs — are never behind a paywall.

The free version shows at most one non-personalized ad a day, never during a workout. Optional upgrades are planned: Plus (a one-time unlock that removes ads and adds every character style, all programs and the food log) and Pro (a subscription for AI meal features, still in development). Final prices will be shown in the App Store and Google Play.

When can I download it?

Shonen is coming to iPhone and Android and isn’t in the stores yet. Join the early-access list and we’ll send one email when it’s ready.

Do I need an account?

No. Everything runs on your phone and works offline. A free account adds cloud backup, syncing between devices, and social features like friends, clubs, challenges and training partners.

Is my health data sold?

Never. We don’t sell your data and we never use health or activity data for advertising. Your health conditions are never shown to other users. Progress photos and raw Apple Health / Health Connect data never leave your phone. See the privacy policy.

Is Shonen medical advice?

No. Shonen gives general fitness guidance based on public guidelines (WHO, ACSM, NICE and others). It doesn’t diagnose or treat anything, and your own clinician’s advice comes first. Stop and get help if you have warning signs such as chest pain, fainting or severe shortness of breath.

I have a health condition. Can I still use it?

That’s exactly who it’s built for. Pick from 50+ conditions — back pain, asthma, diabetes, pregnancy, long COVID, common medicines and more — and every quest adapts. A short PAR-Q+ health check runs first and suggests seeing a professional if anything is flagged. Flare-up mode and sick days give you gentle weeks without losing your streak.

How does the variety engine work?

Each week it plans a mix of strength, cardio, play, mobility and adventure days. It looks at what you did recently and steers away from repeats, filters by your gear, places and health, and skips anything on your “never suggest” list. Each day shows why it was picked. Don’t like it? Reroll the day, swap a quest or remix the week.

What if I miss a day?

Nothing bad happens. Shonen follows “never miss twice”: one missed day is normal, and you get a kind nudge for the next one. Streak freezes and sick days protect your streak, and evolution uses checkpoints, not deadlines.

What devices does it run on?

iPhone and Android phones. It can read steps, weight and sleep from Apple Health or Health Connect and save your workouts there, if you allow it. An Apple Watch / Wear OS app and home-screen widgets aren’t available yet.

Is it accessible?

We’re working on it continuously. The app supports larger text (Dynamic Type), reduced motion, screen-reader labels, read-aloud story narration, a voice coach and rep pacer that count out loud, and a big-text “across the room” mode in the workout player. Seated Strength and Gentle Strength programs suit people who train sitting down or are just starting. If something gets in your way, please tell us via Support.

I don’t want to see weight, calories or my body.

Turn on body-neutral mode to hide weight, photos and body-shape prompts, or eating-disorder-safe mode to also hide calories, measurements and the food log. Calm mode removes countdown beeps and pressure from workouts.

Can I export or delete my data?

Yes. In the app: Hero tab → Your data. Export everything as JSON, or your workouts as CSV. Delete account permanently removes your cloud data. You can also download your data or delete your account on the web at your account page. Deleted data is removed from backups within 14 days.

Are the meetups safe?

Training partner meetups are 18+ only. Your location is rounded to about 1 km, hosts approve who joins, and you can block or report anyone. Always meet in public places and tell someone where you’re going. You can keep an emergency info card in the app.

What age do I need to be?

13 or older to use Shonen, and 18 or older to use training-partner meetups.

Which languages are supported?

English for now. More languages are planned.
